How does Counselling work?
Rosalie Gannon
Rosalie Gannon is a respected and experienced psychologist who has been helping patients to heal and grow for many years . As an endorsed Counselling Psychologist, Rosalie’s aim is to provide personal, results-oriented counselling in an honest, down to earth and relaxing manner.
Rosalie is a psychologist who began this practice in 1990. At that time she was specialising in working with children, their behaviour problems, parenting issues, and learning difficulties. Since then, Rosalie’s interests have become more focussed on trauma and its long term effects. She finds her practice of EMDR Therapy very relevant to the effectiveness of her work in this area.
EMDR Therapy is Rosalie’s treatment of choice. EMDR Therapy allows your therapy to be highly effective, and very efficient, focussing on the critical concerns that each individual brings to therapy.
Rosalie is an Accredited EMDR Consultant and an EMDR Institute Facilitator, so her work is divided between providing counselling for individuals, and supervision and consultancy with a range of EMDR practitioners.

How does Counselling work?
At Acacia Counselling and Psychology Centre we use a range of therapies, selected according to the client’s needs.
In particular we use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), developed in the USA by Francine Shapiro and introduced in 1989. This therapy has been recognized in Australia as the best treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Australia and the USA, is also widely used in Europe, and indeed throughout the World. It is now incorporated into Graduate training programs for professionals dealing with traumatised patients.
Recent research has shown that individuals can be traumatised at any age: even tiny babies can retain the somatic memories of abuse or neglect. Sometimes very minor events can have a traumatic effect on normal development: for example bullying at school. These traumatic memories from childhood are targeted by EMDR and desensitized and reprocessed efficiently and effectively.
It is not surprising that new research is currently being undertaken to demonstrate the effectiveness of EMDR in relation to many other psychological problems.
At Acacia Counselling and Psychology Centre we use EMDR and its related therapy Dual Attention Stimulus to facilitate rapid positive change over a vast range of personal problems. These include, but are not limited to:
- pain management
- depression
- panic attacks
- obsessive compulsive disorder
- anxiety
- grief
- childhood abuse
- sexual assault
- neglect
- loneliness
- fear of abandonment
- low self esteem
